supplemental info
The
Lyons Creek area is a very small subdivision of parcels mostly 40 acres and
more.
There are several beautiful homes on the properties that have been
improved. Lyons Creek Road
is an old county road that dead ends at the entrance to the Sieben Ranch -- on
of the largest
ranches in Montana.
Hunters are allowed to enter the ranch during hunting season, and also
access
the O'Connell Ranch for hunting purposes. There are no 'off road' vehicles
allowed off
the designated trails for hunting. North Lyons Creek branches off Lyons Creek Road to
the north.
It is a private road, not open to the public. It dead ends at the
Wirth Ranch in the Little Creek area.
The Wirth Ranch is not open to the
public. Lyons Creek is at the south end of Wolf Creek Canyon.
Wolf Creek Canyon opens up on the north end into
the Missouri River Corridor. The Missouri
River Corridor situated between Helena and Great Falls, Montana starts below Holter Dam
northeast of the small
comminity of Wolf Creek and is an area that
is very popular with fly fishermen.
The river flows north and has many
tributaries that feed into it. The Dearborn River flows
into the Missouri River
just north of the small fishing village of Craig, MT. This small
town of
about 40 year round residents grows to hundreds of tourists daily who
are traveling through
and staying somewhere locally to enjoy the unlimited
recreational opportunities available in
this area. Craig has several fly
fishing outfitters, retail outlets, restaurants, a deli, taverns,
attorney,
realtor, cabin rentals, RV Hookups and a river side BLM campground. Northeast
of Craig
off of the Craig Frontage Road are two fairly large subdivisions --
the Missouri River Ranch and
Eagle Canyon Estates -- mostly 20 acre parcels
intended for recreational development. Many folks
have chosen to make this area
their permanent home. North of Craig off of I-15 is the Dearborn Exit.
It is
the location of the Dearborn Inn that has much history, and the jumping off
point to many
parcels of land to the west, mostly used for recreational
purposes. Some parcels have never
been developed, but folks set up 'hunting
camps' on them. Some have 'dry cabins' and then some
have very nice homes. A
large portion of the area behind the Dearborn Inn was once the famous
"Seven-Bar-None" Ranch -- a sprawling 600 acre ranch owned by the
Cooper family -- where
Gary Cooper (Frank James Cooper, born May 7, 1901)
learned about horses and wildlife.
Continuing north of the Dearborn Exit is the
Hardy Creek Exit. Here you will find access to
the newly developed "Tower Rock State Park" -- one
of the stops by the Lewis & Clark Expedition
so that they could hike to the
top of the rock to get their bearings. There are some nice homes
along the Missouri River in the Hardy Creek area along with a bar,
restaurant and RV park. There is
the famous "Hardy Creek Bridge"
that crosses the Missouri River just south of
the
Hardy Creek Exit. This is the location of the shooting of part of the movie
"The Untouchables"
- one of the best films ever shot in Montana. On I-15 above
this bridge is an overlook where tourists
stop to view the river corridor. It
was here that part of the movie "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot"
was
filmed. Most of that movie was shot in Great
Falls. North of the Hardy Creek area is the
small
community of Cascade. This little town may have around 1,000 residents if you
include
the surrounding area of Chestnut Valley and River Bend.
There is a K-12 school, bank,
post office, grocery store, three taverns, a
veterinary, boutique, cookie factory, hair salon,
lodging, several churches,
and a newly proposed river access for recreation just north of
town. This is
the closest school and shopping for residents in the "Corridor" with
the exception
of Wolf Creek, where there is a
K-6 scool, convenience store with gas station, post office,
two restaurants and
some outfitters and lodging. Hwy 434 takes off from Wolf Creek to
Hwy 200 where travelers can
drive to Lincoln, Augusta and beyond.
